Latest full version of the mod, compatible with For the Motherland 3.05 or 3.06 only (if you have TFH, you can still play this mod, but you won't see any features from TFH; make sure to place it in the hoi3/mod folder and NOT in the hoi3/tfh/mod folder and make sure to use the ftm launcher in your hoi3 folder). The forum hosted on ModDB has a list of known bugs and issues. Available as a separate download is a .doc manual. When you start the mod up, there's an "introduction" decision that also provides more info. The changelog from the previous version is in the readme. Install instructions below:
NOTE!!! Please check out the graphics packs in the add-ons page. The mod is large, and the pictures have been split from the main files in order to keep file sizes down.
Install Instructions (Mac-specific instructions at the end):
- Before downloading anything, if you have Windows 7 or Vista, then you WILL NOT be able to install the mod if the base game is installed in the Program Files directory. You must copy your game folder to a directory outside of Program Files. Both of those OSs have security "features" that undo changes to any folders inside of Program Files, and moving the game's folder out of that directory will prevent any install problems. 99% of all install problems are caused by not following this step!
- Download the zipped mod files.
- Find your '\Hearts of Iron 3\mod' folder! It doesn't matter if you have TFH or FtM, the folder you're looking for is the same one and will be in the same place for both expansions.
- If you have a previous installation, you will need to delete that. Remove the '\HoI3\mod\HPP' folder and the '\HoI3\mod\HPP.mod' file! (If you didn't have a previous installation, then you obviously don't need to do this.)
- Unrar the files! (The core files and any possible hotfixes go to the '\Hearts of Iron 3\mod' folder). Inside of your mod folder you should end up with a folder named HPP, a file named HPP.mod, and some utility files and readmes.
- Run the mod with the launcher, select 'Historical Plausibility Project' in the "Select mod to play" list, hit "Start HoI3", and let it build up the cache. This step will take several minutes. NOTE: If you have TFH, then the launcher you want to use is named ftm_launcher.exe.
- Quit, copy the contents of '\HoI3\mod\HPP\map\cache' to '\HoI3\map\cache', overwriting everything there. Failure to complete this step will result in purple textures on the map!
- As of version 1.9, optional colored HQ counters (the same ones used in ICE) are now included in the mod files as the file "coloured_hqs.rar". To use them, unrar the .rar file in the mod folder and overwrite when prompted
- Start the mod again.
- Have fun!
Note to Mac users: The Mac version of the base game has problems recreating the map cache. If you download any mod that changes the map you'll see texture errors since for some reason Macs can't rebuild the cache correctly. The final SF and the FtM alpha versions make changes to the map and may result in ugly purple textures. Here's how to get the HPP map to show up using FtM:
1) Install the HPP as directed above, but don't start the mod.
2) Copy your entire VANILLA map folder to a backup location.
3) First replace the files in the folder ../hoi3/map with the files in ../hoi3/mod/hpp/map.
4) Next go into your ../hoi3/map/cache folder and delete every file in it. Keep the folders intact; you only want to delete what's in them.
5) Start up the VANILLA game. The map cache should be rebuilt, which will take a while. If everything worked correctly, then when you start up the game as any country there shouldn't be any purple spots on the map.
6) If the map is purple-free, then exit the game. Copy your entire vanilla map folder over the HPP's map folder.
7) Delete your vanilla map folder if you don't want to use the HPP's map, and replace it with the backup you made in step 2.
8) You should now be able to select the mod in the launcher and play it without any map problems.

we can't download it...
Here's a direct link to all mirrors: Moddb.com (if you see "not available via any mirros error message)
Mod DB staff plans to introduce more servers at the end of March or this April.
no download?
I can't download it
No working mirrors.. Info says three people downloaded today. How?
yeah! I can do it!
I can't... what did you do? :/
click “mirror”
I honestly don't understand why people are having problems. I can download it just fine when logged in or when logged out and downloading as a "guest". Since most of you have modDB accounts you should be able to download it directly from the ModDB servers, so if you can't then you need to go bother the ModDB staff and figure out why you can't download the file when I can do so just fine. You also might be ignoring the pop-up that ModDB creates which has a link to the download.
If you don't have a ModDB account you'll be taken to the GameFront download mirror through a pop-up (you have to click the link in the pop-up!). I heard from someone in the mod's main forum that GameFront is blocked in some countries, so if you can't get it from there then that might be the reason.
popup is blank black box for me, any alternative hosting site or am I sol?
The file you have selected (HPP_2.7.0.rar) is not available via any mirrors. Please check back shortly as our servers update every 5 minutes. To access more download mirrors we encourage you to join the community, otherwise please be patient and keep trying.
That's all it says at the top of the pop up
When I log out and try to download the file as a "guest", what I get is a pop-up with a black center, where an ad will appear. The text at the top, in the white space above the black box, says this: Click to begin downloading HPP_2.7.0.rar from Gamefront. Join our community to download files direct from our servers.
Most file-sharing sites are shady as hell and I'd rather not use them if I can help it.
Sadly, I don't get any add. I guess I'll try with IE *shudder*
Had to use IE. Eww.
That's good to know. I used FireFox and don't have any download issues, so perhaps other browsers are the culprit? What browser were you using before you tried IE? Maybe ModDB doesn't fully support certain web browsers?
It's WORKING , after trying like 35 times, quite the website, and come back, every 5min you have a chance. i waited like 10min, trying again and again. Enjoy.
someone wrote correctly that if you try "many times" it will work.
At last it worked.
Can´t download...
tried ages
Guys, if you can't download the files then complain to ModDB, because their servers are the ones you're trying to download from. I can see that over 3,000 people have downloaded the file just fine and 8 people grabbed it in the past 12 hours, so if you have problems ask ModDB about it, because they're responsible for their servers.
When I downloaded it and got to winzip, it said their was about 20,000 files to extract, and when I try to select to extract, it just freeze and crashes. any help in lightening the load of the extract? my computer is a windows 7 dell inspiron
Don't use winzip, use 7z instead. 7z is free, and is the program I used to compress it.
How can you install and uninstall it?
Is it possible to upload the download already compacted? because due to administrative problems, I cant install 7z, and I believe that is what a lot of moders do anyway, because I have done a lot of mods for Napoleon Total War
Would it work if my game files are in the OS folder, because the hoi3 files are not in the program filse, but PF and hoi3 are both in the OS drive
It'll work just fine, and in fact the install directions have you do what you just said.
I just downloaded the mod today, but after 10-20 minutes of gameplay, it just crashes on me. This happened multiple times, any tips?
Don't run at max speed for the first three months. The base game can crash during some heavy events (think Vichy creation or Bitter Peace), and the mod has a LOT of setup events that fire the first few months of the game. I personally don't have any stability problems, but the people who do have told me that if they slow it down at first they can get past the setup stuff and go full-speed later. Beyond that I don't have any more tips.
Another question, i like playing as china a lot (communist and nationalist) but how can you move the capitol to beijing? Especialy for the communists after they annexed the nationalists. I'm sure adding the make beijing the capitol event would make it a lot more accurate
You have to edit the save game, because I didn't make an event to move the capital.
How do you conquer people? I'm playing as Austria, trying to recreate the Habsburg empire, and I get Austria to a regional power, but when I try to declare war, I can't conquer . Only enforce defeat (and some others)
Check out your International Status laws. You're only allowed to puppet if you're one level higher than your target, and you're only allowed to conquer if you're two levels higher. The restrictions were made in the name of realism, because, for example, it wasn't possible in any way, shape, nor form for Hungary to fully annex nations the size of Romania, or for nations like Argentina to conquer Brazil.
