After the end of the Second World War, the Japanese leadership was forced to surrender to the American naval assaults and subsequent nuclear bomb attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. They had succumb to the will of the Allied troops and had suffered what could be considered a national embarrassment of their country's military and the Emperor's leadership.
With the Americans occupying the vast majority of Japanese territory and the Emperor having been forced to resign his control on a large portion of Eastern Asia, the Japanese people were downtrodden and humiliated. In a surprise rebellion against American Occupation, the local militias rose up against their American masters and what pursued was months of violent protests and destructive activity that had driven out the Americans by pure numbers.
In what was inaptly named by the US Government as a "tactical retreat", the Americans had soured the relationships with the Japanese to breaking point. With no one left to turn to, the Japanese had a massive internal crisis regarding leadership of the country and which led to isolation for a period of 27 years; during which a Civil War throughout the country between loyal royalists and democratic progressives.
Emperor Hirohito was killed in 1947 by an unknown hired assassin. The Empire of Japan had become the State of Japan for a short few years in relative stability.
Five years later; 1952, the USSR had struck a secretive deal with the fugitive royal descendants of Hirohito. The USSR was to lend military aid to the loyalist population of Japan in return for a substantial sum of money; which the royal descendants could obviously afford given their upbringing.
With the combined forces of the USSR and the Japanese militia, the Royalists had large support to take back the land for the Emperor.
The Emperor had quickly set in laws for mandatory military attendance of all people of Japan. After years of turmoil and political uncertainty, the Emperor ruled with an Iron Fist, and yet was worshipped by his people like a god. The state of Japan had become the Empire of the Rising Sun. The official Japanese flag was changed to the military flag of the Rising Sun.
In the modern world, the Empire had served many conflicts on their own terms, and for their own benefit. Due to their unique position on the world map, they had become the de facto mercenary military with no allegiances except to the highest bidder.
Due to this, the Empire is never seen in direct conflict with other nations. Mostly because the Emperor wants to keep his grip on the nation and secondly because the Empire of Japan had become so technologically inferior to their superpower counterparts that they could only battle in small scale conflicts.
Tsunami Tanks are widely used by the Empire for self defence, due to their naturally amphibious qualities that gives them increased versatility on Islands and in Naval Warfare. The Tsunami Tank moves faster while in water and can be obtained on certain maps.
