Mod of the Year

We're back again for an incredible 20th time with the 2021 Mod of the Year Awards. As we do every year, now's the time to look back and give talented mod makers the gratitude they deserve for their creativity throughout 2021.

Last year, the legendary Age of the Ring took first place. Second place went to the respectable Mental Omega, with the classic Project Reality taking the third spot. 10TH PLACE

Ashes 2063

For: Doom II

Ashes is a post apocalyptic TC that combines semi-realistic build engine style maps with fast paced Doom inspired combat. It takes influence from the Fallout and Stalker series. Featuring 2 full episodes and an expansion offering dozens of intricate maps to explore, scavenge and fight through; a deadly arsenal of weapons from lowly 9mm pistols to improvised garage railguns; varied enemies including insane bandit raiders, mutant cannibal warlords and acid spewing carnivorous plants; and an absolute banger of a soundtrack by cacoward winning musician John S.Weekley (aka PRIMEVAL).

The End Of Days is a freeware modification for Command & Conquer: Generals Zero Hour. The mod adds a new playable faction - Russia, and greatly improves the original three with new units, structures and special powers! The main aim of the mod is to bring an authentic real war feeling, with a few fictional additions for more fun and diverse gameplay & tactics! Fight M1A2 Abrams Tanks or T-14 Armata Tanks with your Overlord Tanks supported by Z-19 Attack Helicopters!

X-Ray Multiplayer Extension is a multiplayer modification for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. CoP that brings coop experience to the game. It receives regular updates, support, and new ways to experience S.T.A.L.K.E.R.'s bleak open world with a friend.

The Unofficial Patch is a combination of the default Basic Patch which mostly fixes bugs only, and the optional Plus Patch, which is kind of a mod adding various tweaks and restoring a lot of unused content, including new quests, levels, weapons, items, characters, dialogue, graphics, models, sounds and original music! Included are also the optional Patch Extras which feature player mods, like shaders suites, as well as the Unofficial SDK and other developer tools for modding.

6TH PLACE

Dark Interval

For: Half-Life 2

Dark Interval is a restoration/revision mod that lets you play Half-Life 2 as it could have been. Using Valve's early concepts, they're creating new maps, models, textures, and custom dialogue. The mod is released in episodes, the most recent being Dark Interval: Part I - an intro chapter to the bigger story.

Remastered RA2 and YR single-player Campaigns & fast-paced, balance oriented multiplayer. Rise of the East introduces two completely new factions to the game, East Asia (China) and GLA, from Generals. Full multiplayer functionality using CnCNet Client and many new and unique features, visuals, improvements, units and much more

4TH PLACE

SIGNAL LOST

For: Half-Life

SIGNAL LOST is a total reimagining of Half-Life: Uplink that will take you through a plethora of cut locations that have been recreated with atmosphere in mind. Starting in the Central Command & Communications Center, you must coordinate with your surviving colleagues to unseal the emergency entrance to the vast and mysterious X-Lab complex. Your journey will take you to war-torn freight yards on the surface, to the peak of the massive satellite array overlooking the facility, and finally to plunge the forbidden depths of the X-Labs below.

A Total Red Alert 3 conversion. Features a reimagining of C&C Generals/Zero Hour on Red Alert 3 engine;
powerful SAGE 2.0 Engine and RNA Renderer; powerful networking engine, with no more random desync errors for no reason; remakes of C&C Generals Maps; beautiful Post Processing effects ( HDR, CC, etc. ); stunning Particle Effects; DynLight emitters for better effects expression; enhanced RNA Renderer; and
smart adaptive AI, which reacts and adapts to all your moves.

Initially developed and released by Gearbox Software in 2001, second Half-Life add-on, Half-Life: Blue Shift is a return to the Black Mesa Research Facility and another look at the Incident's consequences from the eyes of Gordon Freeman's best friend - Barney Calhoun. In 2012, Crowbar Collective has delighted Half-Life fans with release of the magnificent Half-Life remake, but there are still no released remakes for add-ons. This is where HECU Collective comes in, who are developing Black Mesa: Blue Shift - a free remake with use of Black Mesa resources and style. Staying as close to the original Blue Shift and Black Mesa as possible, the mod will be releasing partially, chapter by chapter, so those who are not patient for the full release will finally have something to play!

Finally, the 1st place winner for Mod of the Year 2021 is The Chronicles Of Myrtana: Archolos, a free, total conversion mod for Gothic II: Gold Edition. It features a completely new open world, improved skills systems, gameplay mechanics and complex story. Releasing just this December, it's a truly huge mod that, at this stage, surpasses even the term "total conversion". It's no wonder its dedicated fanbase, who were hyped for this release for years, have made a splash and allowed this mod to claim its place in the ModDB Hall of Fame!

Honorable Mentions

With so many fantastic mods posting major updates and leveraging their passionate communities, we'd like to direct your praise and attention to these honorable mentions. A honorable mention is given for polling strongly in the awards, but being ineligible due to placing higher in a previous year, or if a significant update was not released in 2021:

Let me first congratulate to the amazing RTS Mods, The End of Days, Rise of the East and Command And Conquer: Generals Evolution, Mental Omega, Unification Mod - Dawn of War: SoulStorm, since they are one of the best RTS Mods out there! And also to the Half-Life: MMod, since it's one of my favorite Half-Life Mods.

And especially, to this year's winner, The Chronicles of Myrtana, which is a big surprise, but well deserved! Not only that it has professional voice acting, a lot of new mechanics, but also it feels like the original Gothic 2 did, which I thought, was near impossible.

Congrats to all. As a long time C&C fan and creator of the Tiberian Dawn Redux mod its heartwarming to see so many other C&C mods continue to make the list after all these years. EA might have ran the franchise into the ground and left it for dead, but the modding community is keeping it alive!

Congratulations to the winners but I also would like to address my concerns regarding the awarding system to ModDB staff.

1. Best upcoming mod category was won by an indie game. I did read the comments on it, however it's pretty clear to everyone that BFME: Reforged is a standalone game, based on Unreal Engine 4. Now, let's be perfectly honest here, a mod is a game MODification, its as simple as it gets. Unreal Engine 4 is not a game. It's the engine, designed to create new games. There was a point made by the ModDB staff that the work Reforged team does is equal to what modders do, however I disagree with this point because if you open their website you'll see that they take patreon donations and as it seems, it's used to fund some of their team members, if not all of them.

2. Why is it okay that at least 2 out of 10 Player's Choice winners are mods that had their first release on dates that were past Dec 1st? Let me remind y'all that voting for best mod of the year started on Dec 1st. Why is it okay to run for the best mod after that date?

3. I understand that a mod is ineligible to be awarded and only gets an honourable mention if it's ranked lower this year than the year before. Now, I don't agree with this approach but that's not my point.
How do you decide a mod is eligible or not, based on it's ranking? To be more precise, how exactly do you determine ranking? Do you simply rank all mods and make a mod ineligible based on it's ranking before filtering?
For example, there could be a mod that was ranked 9th last year in unfiltered ranking and this year it was ranked 10th. It makes this mod ineligible BUT if the list has 2 or more mods that were also ranked lower than the last year and are higher in the ranking than 10th mod, then technically the mod that's 10th in unfiltered ranking becomes 8th (or higher) in filtered ranking, which is higher than the past year. So how exactly is mod's ranking determined after filtering out ineligible mods?

4. Also, shouldn't consistency matter? It's a small point of mine but I think it makes a difference if mod released one major update towards the end of a year vs a mod that was releasing major updates each next month.

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against either of the winners, I don't demand any changes to the results but I want to publicly show that I don't agree with the way it's calculated and I don't take seriously such awarding system that has the problems described above.

I understand that the idea was probably so that new mods have a bigger chance to win the awards when it comes to a competiotion between new mods against older mods with established communities but if this was indeed the goal, simply split the award on 1) best mod of the year, and 2) best NEW mod of the year.

the indie game or whatever is BFME: Reforged's dev already stated on Dec 22 that their project is not a mod and neither they use the page on Moddb which already begs the question how the staff even looks at mods and determines they should even be eligible for contests.

Cdn.discordapp.com

And what's even worse, the Dev literally edited his comment today to remove what he said about the project being not a mod and people already have screenshots, he deleted comments of other people asking him why he did that.

Cdn.discordapp.com

if the project owners are like this, I hardly think they deserve to be in this place much less be even allowed to participate in a contest for Upcoming *Mods*.

in my own opinion. this not only makes the entire contest feel even lesser of value but also worthless when indie projects which are getting paid thru paetron can literally win contests that are meant for mods by people who spend nearly decades working on them for free.

Hi - we have read and considered all of the concerns above. We will evaluate rulings for next year's awards and consider a different approach to how placements are awarded as the definition of mod is beginning to be stretched in regards to some placements in the upcoming listing (I encourage you to continue this conversation on that page, instead of dragging it over to this article too). However, for this year's awards, we will not be adjusting the positioning of the winners.

Whether a mod released after December 1st is immaterial to deciding the result - the cut-off point is once voting is concluded, not any time prior. Many mods deliberately save major updates for the MOTY period in order to get traction during the event, and as long as they have made a release prior to the results being calculated, they are eligible for released.

Filtered ranking does take these factors into account to the best of our ability.

Mods are only deemed ineligible if they fail to meet a number of criteria. Infrequent updates is not enough to have a mod removed from the running as some mods may release one explosive article per year that garners thousands of views and immense hype, and be able to work off of that hype for the rest of the year. Other mods release bite-sized updates weekly and garner attention that way.

Congratulations to all winners of both Best Upcoming and Best Released, and thank you to everyone who participated in the voting this year. We hope everyone had a great Christmas and is looking forward to 2022!
