While you were battling the evil forces of D'Sparil, the other Serpent Riders were busy sowing the seeds of destruction in other dimensions. One such dimension is the decaying world where Hexen takes place. A world littered with the mangled corpses of nonbelievers and inhabited by the undead followers that executed them. Only three humans &endash; a warrior, a mage and a cleric &endash; have escaped the leaders' vicious spell. Now these brave souls have sworn to crush the evil regime that threatens to destroy the world forever. Separated upon entering the mystical portal, the three are forced to attempt on their own what they had hoped to do together: find Korax's stronghold, destroy him and restore order in the physical world.
Greetings mortal... Are you ready to die?
Presenting Bernewfie - source port for original 1995 Hexen game by Raven and id Software that runs in DOS. While the main goal of the source port was to introduce higher resolution video mode (640x400 or 640x480 based on your video card capabilities) it also carries a few "quality of life" improvements, and is now available for download on ModDB both as binary and source distributions.
Change to original Hexen include:
* Freelook mode and easy flight controls (pressing the jump mouse button and moving mouse vertically changes height)
* 10 more savegame slots available in higher resolution mode
* Quicksaving and quickloading games shows fewer yes/no prompts and when dying latest players quicksave will be loaded instead of game's own autosave
* Vertical mouse movement can be blocked altogether
All of the changes require a command line argument to be activated, so please check the the mod's profile page for details on how to do this.
Note: Playing requires downloading and dropping in the exe-file as well as original Hexen and/or Deathkings IWADs. For key binding configuration original SETUP.EXE from Hexen is also required; the one included in the distribution is for sound setup only.
As an extra, Bernewfie includes changes to balance and game flow found in "Hexen Unofficial Update" mod and ported from ZScript to C engine code. The mod rebalances player's weapons making Mage significantly more deadly and playing Mage significantly less drudgery, and deals with certain nuisances, including overpowered Centaur blocks.
Pressing M in automap screen of this version marks the locked doors in current level with icons of the corresponding keys required for opening them. Pressing M again clears these marks.
Balance changes are only found in the specialized build BERNEW12.EXE that is a drop in replacement for BERNEW.EXE and no additional command line arguments are required to activate them. At the moment of writing BERNEW12.EXE is still of beta quality and players' feedback is welcome.
Bernewfie is based on the original Raven source code with additions from MBF 2.04 Doom Source port by @gerwin and is linked with customized libAllegro version produced by @gerwin. Balance and flow changes in the BERNEW12.EXE are all based on "Hexen Unofficial Update 1.2" ZScript mod released by Boondorl on ZDoom boards in 2022.

That satisfying punch the fighter character dishes out was the best :)
I think Shadewood puzzle is broken. I can't get one of the horn panels to show up even though I've pulled both switches (one in the Caves of Circe, one in Darkmere). Moddb.com
Proof 1 (Caves of Circe): Moddb.com
Proof 2 (Darkmere): Moddb.com
Can't progress.
Nevermind. Found a youtube video and realized I missed a switch in wasteland.
How to play Hexen on iMac?
Go buy some Hexen, then download GZDoom on Mac. If you don't have OpenGL requirements for GZDoom, then download ZDoom.
Hexen!!!! I love the game's environment.
I agree, between the gothic buildings and the incredible (and sometimes impossible) sights of the outdoor levels, Hexen definitely pulls off some of the most awe inspiring views of old-school fps games.
The Hexen games feel much more fun and better put together than the Heretic games, at least to me.
Heretic's extension of two more episodes still wasn't good enough, they didn't even bother to add a new boss or any boss at all, they just felt mostly like extra filler.
Fantastic game.
Pair with Quake and Diablo.
Which of the files for download is Hexen?
