I love the look, feel and genre How to Survive composes. What an awesome looking game. More than just run-n-gun, but survive the elements and nature.
doesn't feel like a survival game.. feels like a rather poor linear hack-n-slash game. Because its linear it just throws all the **** you need to "survive" on the one road you need to take. So its not survival and exploring but... collect ****.
The crafting is rather odd. It combines everything for you so you have no idea how your crafting it, the game might as well dispense with it altogether and hand the finished items because thats how it ends up feeling in the end.
You get blueprints by visiting huts that stand out like a sore thumb along the one path you take. Lame. I want to discover how to craft myself through "experimentation" but after what we've seen so far that's asking to much from the devs that don't have a clue.
It seems to me that "survival" is really hard to do in a linear game... Here its done very poorly so the question of whether its a survival game answers itself here. This is rather poor even for a casual XBLA experience.
Go back to the drawing board and make a non-linear game.. its a god damn island for gods sake.
I usually prefer open-world/non-linear games too. There are a few linear ones that are pretty good like Titan Quest.
If they are creative and the game is huge, then linear won't be so bad, but it does kill the re-playability.
