You're forgetting Portal is Half-life canon. I doubt the portal gun will be in HL2:EP3. On the other hand, P2 is uses a art style closer to HL2 for a reason.

portal gun is basically a gravity gun, exept you can't launch things or shoot portals. lol!
Sorry for a 2 year bump but,
The portal gun was orignally based on the gravity gun, only they made the portal device look cleaner and whitish.
