Crossbow it's a small ballista. The ballista is a creation of the ancient greek... crossbows of the ancient antiquity are not weapons of war beacause they lack power of penetration, they are hunting weapon. But in the late antiquity, war crossbown are not unseen. Hieron of Alexandria make a powerfull automactic (repeatable) heavy tripod crossbow the "Polybolos"... the firt machinegun ! (sorry for my bad englsih, it's not my native tongue)
