Research and Development is a puzzle-centric mod for Half-Life 2: Episode Two featuring an unarmed player but plenty of violent mayhem.
This patch fixes most issues related to engine branch incompatibility and is designed to run using the latest "Beta" of Source SDK Base 2013 Singleplayer. Instructions on how to install and use it are within the archive.
If you have any questions related to this patch, please let me know.
Criticism & suggestions are greatly appreciated.
After dealing with the Zombies, When I keep trying to leave the vehicle (Mr. Whirly), and whenever I do, my controls screw up. Leaving lets me jump, but all of my movement buttons are still bound to the vehicle. Can someone fix this problem, without the use the console cheat codes?
Windows 10 won't download it. Says it has a virus. ?
False positive, just ignore it.
hey so when i installed VIA method 1 a message saying this popped up:"Setupfile 'gameinfo.txt' doesn't exist in subdirectory 'research and development'. Check your -game parameter or VCONFIG setting." (no brackets) help me please! (i even renamed it from "gameinfo" to "gameinfo.txt")

What shud i do?
background_image.vtf missing. How can i fix that?
Hello, I can't download this mod without "emo textures", could you help me, maybe I'm doing something wrong.
It's Great to see that you're fixing up these Classic HL2 Mods.
For those who haven't played the mod, there might be some SPOILERS in the following words. Please read at your own risk.
-SPOILER ALERT-
The patch worked until the second level called "ACID TEST" in the Waste Transfer Facility. In the beginning of the level, after you break the pipes and go forward until you see a fast zombie that gets killed by 3 turrets. When you beat the turrets with gravity gun (or bypass them protecting yourself with glass shield) the player dies with no cause where fast zombie died. I could not pass that point without cheating (NOCLIP does not work, either. I had to cheat with GOD).
I don't know if it happened because of the patch or the mod itself. Now, I'm going to pass that location by cheating, and let you know if anything else happens afterwards.
By the way, just to let you know: I did not have the same error before when I played the mod with previous fixes that I found in the forums (I don't remember which fix I used).
-SPOILER ALERT-
Thank you in advance for your interest.
@ubilada
Thank you for the information.
I will have a look at it and come back to you as soon as possible.
@ubilada
I decompiled the level and examined the location.
There is an invisible trigger that hurts players
where you died (right in front of the turrets).
This trigger is disabled only when players have bullet proof
glass picked up by Gravity gun (weapon_physcannon). Upon
dropping or punting the shield, it will reactivate.
I also checked the start of the level, (in the air vent).
A trigger restores players' health to it's maximum, which
means that you start the level at full health, regardless
if you began a new game or simply are transiting from previous
level.
If you do have other questions, please let me know.
A huge thanks for testing these patches. It is appreciated.
You're welcome! Actually, I thank you for giving an excuse to replay these great mods. What I do is not as important as what you've been doing! I just share my experiences and try to give you a little help!
I checked it again and that's right! I used the bullet proof glass and the error just disappeared.
I'll let you know if I have any other problems.
Thanks for updating!
Do I need the first download to play the game or can I just download this?
When i try to download the patch, my computer says that it contained a virus and was deleted.
@ptolthegoodguy
This is mostly a false positive.
You will need to add this downloaded file to the list of exclusion.
I can assure you that I would never upload malicious data onto this website. In addition to this, files are being monitored by moderators/administrators before allowing the download to be available.
Anyone else having problems with Mr. Whirly? I keep trying to leave the vehicle, and whenever I do, my controls screw up. Leaving lets me jump, but all of my movement buttons are still bound to the vehicle. Can someone fix this problem please?
I can't download the patch, as it says, "Failed - virus detected"
What do I do?
@photogcyn
This is a false positive.
Are you possible using Microsoft Essential? An other member
stated that MS essentials treats it as malware.
You need to add it to your exclusion list.
No. I dont use MS Essential. It might becon my computer though as I have that whole stupid subscription thing.
Just to be clear, when you say ". . .add it to your. . . ," which do you mean? The mod or MS Essential? I'm not sure what 'it' refers to.
Thank you for your help.
@photogcyn
You will need to add the file(s) that is/are 'treated' as a virus
to the exclusion list. In your case, the mod.
That's what I thought! Just want to be sure. Thank you, malortie
@malortie I have the patch downloaded, but where do I extract it to? R&D or HFL2 or by itself or something else? Thanks!
You will need to extract it to your sourcemods folder.
.i.e:
C:/Program Files/Steam/steamapps/sourcemods/Research and Development
If you encounter other problems, I recommend that you read 'readme_fix.txt' found within the archive, in the mod's folder.
If you have other questions, please let me know.
@malortie
I am a complete failure at this. Maybe I'm overthinking all this.
I HAVE read the 'readme_fix.txt' but I'm still not sure about things and though I extracted the fix patch to C:/Program Files/Steam/steamapps/sourcemods/Research and Development, the game still won't launch due to the can't find stuff .vtf file.
I have tried to add the -allowdebug to the General tab, but "Set Launch Options" doesn't show up on that right click/open tab. If I could post a pic, it would show what I have.
Just to be clear, I right click on the "Research and Development" fold icon and click on "Properties" at the bottom of the list to get to the "General" tab. Is that right? When I do that, I don't see "Set Launch Options." I also went through all the other tabs and didn't see "Set Launch Options" anywhere.
And to be clear again, I ran the "RD_17.7.2009_Full_Install" and the game was automatically put into the C:/Program Files/Steam/steamapps/sourcemods, which is what I have. Then I extracted the patch to C:/Program Files/Steam/steamapps/sourcemods/Research and Development, which I did. Nothing happened. I've looked to add the -allowdebug but can't find where to click for that. That is where I am.
Thank you for your patience and help.
@photogcyn
I am quite sure that you installed mission improbable and applied the patch correctly.
What I suspect is that you are currently not enrolled in the 'Upcoming beta'. You might also have corrupt game cache.
Please, follow these steps.
1. In the tool section of Steam, Right-click on Source SDK Base 2013 Singleplayer and then go to the 'Properties' section.
Source SDK Base 2013 Singleplayer -> Properties
2. From 'Properties', you should see 'Betas' tab. Change selection from "NONE - Opt out of all beta programs" to "Upcoming".
3. Still in SDK 2013 properties, go to the 'Local Files' tab and select "Verify integrity of game cache". Wait for the inspection to complete.
4. Restart Steam and try launching the mod again.
I hope this helps.
@malortie
I have done 1. and 2.
However, with #3, when I go to "Local Files" tab, I have the following:
[highlighted] Disk usage: none
[in dull gray]
BROWSE LOCAL FILES...
BACKUP TOOL FILES...
DELETE LOCAL TOOL CONTENT...
VERIFY INTEGRITY OF TOOL CACHE...
CLOSE
I don't have "Verify integrity of game cache."
Am I doing this wrong or something I'm not seeing?
Thanks again
@photogcyn
Apologies, I meant to say that you need to select "Verify integrity of tool cache".
Both are the same. It is just for convenience that they name this button, in the case of either tools and or games.
Click "Verify integrity of tool cache". Wait for the process to complete. This will ensure that all files are valid, so if any file is missing, it will be reacquired.
Please note that the steps, at the exception of the last one (Verify game cache integrity) only need to be done once. This will work for almost any patch I created.
Still, it will require you to ensure that every step in Readme.txt files are followed, since some patches required additional tasks to be correctly installed. In about 95% of the cases, it is the same procedure as you are doing right now.
Arg...As I mentioned above about the links being in dull gray, I meant that they aren't active links. Nothing happens to them when I click the, including the Verify integrity of tool cache."
Also, I don't have "Source SDK Base 2013 Singleplayer" in this location: <Drive>:\Steam\steamapps\common
When I right click on "Source SDK Base 2013 Singleplayer" it appears that I could download the game in Steam, as it is showing that it's not installed.
Thank you, again.
@photogcyn
You need to install the Source SDK Base 2013 Singleplayer. It is required, as mentioned in the readme_fix.txt.
Once completed, perform all verifications that I previously stated.
I hope this helps.
I am understanding this more and more. Will install Source SDK Base 2013 Singleplayer
Thanks
@malortie
Aah! I am NOT enrolled in the Source SDK Base 2013 Singleplayer. I will follow the above steps and report.
Thank you for your kind patience!
When I load up the game, there is no maps to start from, so it won't let me pick "Start New Game" and the water is pink/black square textures even though I have HL2:E2 installed.
Have you read the installation instructions in readme_fix.txt?
In this Source SDK 2013 patch, a file named readme_fix.txt is available and contains all the information on how to correctly install the mod.
I got the same problem, i made sure i did exactly everything in the txt file and i followed method 1
I still don't know what i did wrong
spartanwar118
I downloaded the mod, along with the Steampipe patch. I installed the patch with the 2 methods and both work.
Is it possible that you might have extracted the mod to the wrong folder? If not, please make sure that you are enlisted in the Source SDK 2013 beta, have verified the file integrity for all the following games:
- Source SDK Base 2013 Singleplayer.
- Half-Life 2: Episode 2
I recommend that you restart Steam and launch the games above at least once.
Assuming that you have followed the instructions and that you are still experiencing issues, I am afraid I do not see any other solution.
If your menu background is train wreck and pink black checkerboard on the ground - you only installed the patch and not the mod itself.
how do I get the patch and the mod to coincide with each other? both just create a folder in sourcemods separate from each other (except for option 1 of the patch)
I am unable to launch the mod. Every time I try to play it an error pops up saying "Can't find background image. materials/console/startup_loading.vtf"
Help!
i have this problem where i press start new game but it doesn't work i kept try and trying but the star button won't work

startup_loading.vtf missing. what
I'm looking for the "incoming" beta for the thing but there's only "Upcoming"
Also whenever I click play it goes to a black screen, and a couple seconds after it just boots me back to steam
Help?
Same problem. Hope author will help us
