Vanilla? Madder AKA VMD or VMD Sim is a Deus Ex vanilla conversion focused heavily on RPG and roleplay elements, immersive sim gameplay, modernization/QOL, and more. Skill trees, hunger/stress/smell systems, in depth character customization, status effects from foods, and so much more are included. It also boasts the ability to run with almost any mod, and, in the future, will be able to be used as a near-universal starting point for any total conversion.

Note: While not beta or demo, the project is in phase 1.75 of development. The project will reach its ultimate form at phase 4. It's begun to rapidly accumulate features, so watch out for when phase 2 formally drops. Arguably, it is very much worth at least one try. Or not. You're allowed to dislike it, too.

Howdy. It has come to my attention that in P1.5, there is an issue at the main menu for some users. Exact cause is being investigated. If your main menu is glitched and you can't open the menus, this guide covers what you can do to fix it.

1. Find your VMDSimUser.ini file. It should be in your DeusEx\System. For steam users, this defaults to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\DeusEx\System. Open it in notepad or another text editor.
2. Find your VMDSimDefUser.ini file. It should be in the same directory, and open it in a text editor as well.
3. Select all the contents in the VMDSimDefUser file. This is easily done in most programs with Ctrl+A. Copy the contents with Ctrl+C or right click menu to "copy".
4. Select all the contents in the VMDSimUser file, then delete the contents.
5. Paste in the content you copied from VMDSimDefUser with either Ctrl+V or the right click menu to "paste".
6. Save the VMDSimUser file, restart your game.

If this did NOT resolve your issue, and you're using kentie's launcher, either enable local data setting, or follow the next steps.
7. Go to your non-local data directory for kentie's configuration. On windows 10, this is C:\Documents\Deus Ex\System. Find VMDSimUser.ini and open it in notepad.
8. Copy and paste data from VMDSimDefUser.ini like in step 3. Then delete all the contents of the VMDSimUser.ini for kentie's, like in step 4. Paste in the contents from VMDSimDefUser.ini into the VMDSimUser.ini file, like in step 5.
9. Save the file, like in step 6. Start deus ex again.

A better solution for this will be investigated in the future, but for now that's the current fix. I hope you enjoy VMD Sim.

Is there any way to make use of the various fixes that DeusExe provides, such as removing mouse acceleration and scaling down the HUD?

The executables that the mod launches from just skip the launch menu entirely.

The launch menu is exclusive DeusExe is why. It uses launch by hanfling, because it has a better history of running with large mods. That being said, if you run the default executable at least once (to generate a proper ini from the default, which DeusExe cannot do on its own), you can replace VMDSim.Exe with a renamed DeusExe and launch it from that instead.

Mouse acceleration fix is queued up to be included in phase 2's release, because man that crap is not consistent between machines and settings.

Hanfling also made an edited DLL for it you can find here:
Coding.hanfling.de

You'll install that to DeusEx\System directory, and it should work for VMD. HUD scaling is otherwise controlled by resolution in fullscreen gameplay. UI scaling is not consistent based on resolution, though, some higher resos (such as 1920x1080) have abnormally large HUD due to the math involved with vanilla UI scaling. Stepping down to 1600x900 seems to work well for me.

every time I try to start a new game it gives me the error of "can't bind to native class DXOgg.DXOgg" at first i thought i needed to download a more updated version of VC++ runtime and that didn't work, tried reinstalling and that didn't work either, tried doing it manually didn't work too, so i'm crap out of luck right now and want to ask what you think it could be

Interesting. Did you do manual or automatic install? This is usually because the DXOGG bundled was not loaded in the proper order. There should be a DXOGG.ddl bundled with the DeusEx\System installed files, and a DXOGG.u bundled with the DeusEx\VMDSim\System directory. Ensure both exist, and that you are using the intended EXE and INI for VMDSim.

that was the problem it fixed it but for some reason the installer didn't put it in there

Excellent. I'm glad that fixed it for now. Let me know if you need anything else, or have any feedback. I'm always happy to answer as best I can. I'm hoping to entirely redo the installer for P1.75, since the current one has a lot of issues for some folks.

Does this work with Lay D Denton 1.1?

Yup. It was one of the first mods to adopt it, as of Phase 1.5. VMD adds much more character customization, so it's a good way to accessorize a female JC, in fact. Lay D Denton presence is autodetected in VMD, so make sure you have it installed. IIRC, our latest installer actually allows you to install LDDP 1.1 in tandem, but it may be an outdated version by this point, so I'd encourage you to install the real thing.

The mod doesn't seem to launch from the EXE provided, and the desktop shortcut is pathed to UnrealEd, which isn't installed by the mod.

Interesting, I've never heard of this issue before. Can you send me some screenshots of the shortcut's target path, and a log of VMDSim.exe (VMDSim.txt, it's named) after trying to launch the game?
