Half-Life: Field Intensity

Mod review

This mod is well and truly incredible, I did play this mod with the Fanmade patch that changed the NPC's to the ones from the Revitalization Project, as I prefer things closer to the LD models myself. I also played it on medium difficulty so i'll probably have to end up going back to it on hard, just to see how much more it kicks my ***. Anyway, the level design is solid all around, what they did for the 'Squad' System is good, letting you see NPC health, and being able to call an entire squad of soldiers with just one button is great.
The voice acting is pretty terrible across the board, Hate me if you must, but I probably would have liked the dialogue more if it was put through one of those AI voices things to make them sound like the OP4 HECU guys and other characters in line with the game. Also in regards to the voices, one thing I thought was strange and a bit of an oversight was when an NPC with an actual voice actor, like "Francis" for example would use default HECU lines when standing around, and then when a scripted sequence would come by, he'd go back to talking with the amateur voice actor trying to do a L4D Francis impression. Like uh, as much as I dislike the VA job from most the NPC's, I would rather consistency across the board rather then half custom job, half default game.
Stories decent, I like how you get to go through all points of the games, like Decay, Blue Shift, and Opposing Force, from my recollection all the scripted stuff on that front was good. Without getting deep into the realm of spoilers, I'll say, I thought the twist near the end of the game was pretty lame, but that was because I felt the delivery of all the lines lacked any real emotional weight. I know I referenced AI voices earlier, but I certainly feel that character in particular could have used an actual person who could do justice to the lines they were putting out there.
But yeah, gameplay's fun, I think I got lost like, once MAYBE twice in the duration of the mod, but that's just me. If you enjoy Half-Life 1 and Opposing Force, you'll likely have a great deal of fun in this one, definitely recommended.

Cinematic Battles

Mod review

Absolute banger of a mod, very fun and enjoyable. Has only a few bugs and issues that can easily be fixed (I think). One most annoying gameplay hangups I've been having as of late is against guard AI. Normally they're fine to play against until you get constantly spammed by their commander units ability to airstrike you anywhere on the map. To put it simply, it is not fun to play against. Doing a guard 1 v 1 v 1 you'll find yourself constantly targeted by this attack destroying your infantry units while they're in the middle of taking a point or standing around awaiting orders. This would not be so bad if for one, the enemy actually needed a line of sight on you to issue an airstrike; which they don't, and two, if they used these airstrikes on other AI enemies; which I also believe they do not. An issue like this would likely be fixed by adding a game rule that removes the ability for the enemy AI to use airstrike abilities, similer to "restriction: aircraft" game rule. One thing i'd also like to see added would be extra game rules. A couple I can think of right off the bat would definitely be "Auto Abilities" for people like myself that can't micromanage things like infantry throwing krak grenades and, something like an "infantry only" mode, or better yet, a few tier limiter game rules for when you want to see units of a certain tier hash it out. And one last thing i'd like to see more of that specifically relates to chaos is the use of renegades late into a match. I've noticed the AI will still use cultists instead of renegades later into matchs as scout units or whatever, when I think it would be a lot better if they bothered to use renegades more often. Anyway, thanks for the amazing mod that I've put many an hour into. I think I can safely say on behalf of another friend that also plays this mod is that we hope to see more updates for it soon.

SHRINE

Mod review

Really excellent total conversion with solid art direction, amazing music, good atmosphere, and overall fun shooting. I think in a lot of ways it can get pretty easy with the universal soul ammo, which is an interesting idea in concept, but when you factor in the big boy weapons also use the same ammo, you can see where some problems would arise. I also felt that the weapons binds were off, so when I went to press 3 for the shotgun I would get nothing, and more often then not I would end up having to cycle through all my weapons to get the one I want, which can be a real problem in the heat of the moment. But yeah, despite all that, and despite it being pretty short, it had a lot of intense moments and I really enjoyed it, and hope to see you improve, and make more stuff in the future.

EDIT: Recent update fixed the weapon slots and even added a hud, which I forgot to mention the mod was missing previously.

Ultimate Apocalypse Mod (DOW SS)

Mod review

Best Warhammer mod around that's still getting updates to it. I'd say it's a must play to anyone who thought Soulstorm was lacking or was a fan of any of the Dawn of War games.
