Type 23 is the general purpose frigate of the Royal Navy.
A total of 16 ships were built and commissioned by the British Navy, although being a lower-cost, and older design, the class is currently undergoing extensive modernization, allowing it to be viable until as far as 2036.
The modernization program include the advanced Artisan 3D turn-able phase array radar. The long range version of the light weight radar is capable of detecting targets as far as 300km, for large maritime aircraft, as far as 260km, and for missiles as far as 65km. It is capable of tracking more than 800 targets simultaneously, compared that of the heavy weight Aegis system with SPY-1 radar, the early version of which can only track 128 targets. Revolving at 12 rpm, the refresh rate for the radar is very high, as it scan electronically from horizon to zenith, thus each revolution would mean a volume search around the detection radius, creating a hemisphere of searched volume with radius up to 300km, per 5 seconds.
In addition to its advanced radar, the modernization also gives the Type 23 advanced Thales Sonar 2087 towed array, with detection range up to 131km. The Type 23 has one of the most powerful ASW sonar system available, equaling it with the newer, larger, more expensive Franco-Italian FREMM frigate.
New weapon system would also be retrofitted to the Type 23 frigates: the CAMM missile, a modified version of the RAF ASRAAM short range, image IR guided missile. The CAMM missile features a active radar seeker instead of an IR one. It has a max range of more than 25km, and a top speed of mach 3. Its a major upgrade over the original seawolf missile of the Type 23, which can only reach 10km at mach 3. The Type 23 would pack 40 CAMM missiles as the main local area defense for the ship and the fleet near by.
The ship also carries Harpoon missiles for anti ship purpose, Sting Ray torpedo for anti submarine, a 113 mm gun for fire support and various fixed small arms.
